Best Tacos in Jaco: Where to Get Real Mexican Street Tacos

Jacó has no shortage of places to eat — surf cafés, beach bars, steakhouses and sodas line Avenida Pastor Díaz. But if you’re searching for the best tacos in Jaco, the kind you’d find on a street corner in Mexico City or Guadalajara, you want a proper taquería. Here’s what to look for, and what to order when you find it.

What makes a real street taco

A Mexican street taco is simple and small: a soft corn tortilla, a generous spoonful of well-seasoned meat, and toppings you add yourself — onion, cilantro, a squeeze of lime and salsa. It isn’t a hard shell piled with lettuce and cheddar. The meat is the star, and the salsa is the personality.

Because each taco is small, the move is to order several and mix fillings. At Taco Taco Jacó tacos are ₡1,200 each, so a plate of three or four lets you try different meats without spending much.

Al pastor: the king of Mexican tacos

Tacos al pastor are marinated pork, seasoned with chiles and spices, traditionally cooked on a vertical spit called a trompo and shaved thin. The result is smoky, a little sweet, a little spicy. If you only order one taco in Jacó, make it al pastor. Our Ding Dong deal — three tacos al pastor plus a drink for ₡3,990 — is the easiest way to start.

Birria: the taco everyone is talking about

Birria is a slow-cooked, deeply spiced stew from Jalisco. Tender birria in a corn tortilla is a revelation, and the rich consommé it cooks in is so good we built a whole dish around it: Birria Ramen, with rice noodles and melted mozzarella.

Beyond the taco

Mexican street food goes far beyond tacos. Try a gringa (a griddled flour tortilla with cheese and meat), the Torta Chingona (a Mexican sandwich with a crispy cheese crust), or, if you’re feeling playful, Dorilocos and the Doriburro — both loaded with Doritos, guacamole and sour cream.

Don’t skip the salsa

Salsa turns a good taco into a great one. Start mild and work your way up: smoky Alebrije has no heat at all, La Niña brings pineapple and chipotle, La Pancho Villa is bright green tomatillo, and our red “Chinga tu Madre” is strictly for the brave.
